Climbing School

Pack Shack Adventures, Inc. has been offering rock climbing and rappelling since 1974. We are proud to have one of the few climbing schools on the east coast. We are equally as proud of our accident free safety record!

Climbing instruction is offered on three different levels. They are Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced. We offer Private and Semi-private lessons. Lessons start in the morning about 8:00 or 9:00 and continue to mid-afternoon. All necessary equipment for a safe and enjoyable day is provided.

Students should bring a bag lunch, and plenty to drink. (Absolutely, NO alcohol!)

Climbing lessons are conducted in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. Pack Shack Adventures, Inc. is licensed by the National Park and is insured.

Our climbing instructors/guides are radio dispatched and are certified in first aid and C.P.R. Each has had many years of personal climbing experience.

Private Lessons

For a one on one, personalized instruction. These lessons are conducted on the cliffs of Mt. Tammany on the New Jersey side of the Delaware Water Gap or Mt. Minsi on the Pennsylvania side. Most climbs are two pitches (approx. 280 ft.) high. The actual climbing route is chosen by the instructor and is geared to the individuals climbing experience. You will learn about equipment and its proper use, climbing knots, safety procedures, belaying, climbing techniques, and rappelling.

Semi Private Lessons

A perfect adventure for you and an outdoor friend. Only two people per instructor to insure safety and quality, yet a lower price because it is shared by two. The lessons are also conducted on the cliffs of Mt. Tammany and cover the same topics as the private lessons.

Group Instruction

Group instruction is available for school, youth, and community groups. Your group may chose an introduction to climbing and rappelling, or a day of rappelling only. Both are conducted in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. One adult leader, from your group, is required for each six youths. Our minimum group size is 12.

Recognition

Each participant will receive a "Certificate of Achievement". Custom P.S.A. Climbing School tee shirts are available at our base at a reduced rate to our climbing school graduates.

Equipment Sales

At our base we carry a full line of the latest climbing equipment. Ropes, harnesses, helmets, climbing shoes, hardware, chalk, and books are all here! Anyone taking a lesson will receive a 10% discount on gear.

Climbing Guide to the Gap

Pack Shack Adventures, Inc. publishes and distributes the only "Climbing Guide to the Delaware Water Gap." Written by Mike Steele, former ranger of the  Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. Mike's duties included patrolling the cliffs as well as being a part of the high angle rescue team. His first hand knowledge of the cliffs makes this book a valuable asset for any climber in the gap.
